The social development program

A journey to global citizenship

At Kings Schools, the Social Development Program is more than just a weekly session. It is the heartbeat of the school’s mission to develop learners into individuals with strong life skills, positive values, and an attitude that promotes harmony and understanding. The program is carefully designed to ensure that every learner, regardless of their background, embraces the differences between people from all corners of the world, preparing them to become true global citizens.

The vision of Kings Schools is clear: to be the leading provider of primary and nursery education in Uganda and beyond. Through the Social Development Program, they aim not only to nurture the academic potential of every learner but also to instill in them the values of empathy, respect, and collaboration. Each learner is encouraged to work with others from different cultures, backgrounds, and religions, recognizing that the world is a vast, interconnected community.

The learners are divided into four States: California, New Delhi, Cape Town, and Scotland. These States represent the major continents of America, Asia, Africa, and Europe—symbols of unity in diversity. The program’s objective is to create a microcosm of the world where learners can interact with peers from different continents, learning to appreciate diversity while building strong friendships based on respect and understanding.

Each State is led by two key figures: a State Commissar (the teacher) and a State Governor (a learner). These leaders work together to guide their States, setting the example of leadership, responsibility, and accountability. The leadership roles in the States are not just about titles but about instilling the core values of the program: trustworthiness, responsibility, and the ability to work in unity despite differences.

Further enriching the experience, learners are also divided into families named after holy saints, such as St. Madro, St. Viator, St. Edward, St. Raphael, and many others. These families, each with a mentor who guides around 25 learners, add a spiritual touch to the program, emphasizing the importance of moral values and personal integrity.

Every Tuesday, these mentors meet with their mentees for the Social Development session. It is a space for reflection and growth. The mentees evaluate the past week, discussing their challenges, successes, and any obstacles they have encountered. The mentors listen attentively, sitting down with their learners as a sign of humility, giving them a voice and making them feel heard. It is a safe space where learners can express themselves freely without fear of judgment.

The themes of each week are carefully selected to address the most important life skills and values. Topics like honesty, trustworthiness, accountability, and responsibility are discussed in depth. Mentees are encouraged to set personal goals, helping them apply these values to their daily lives. Each mentor guides their group, suggesting solutions to the challenges raised by the learners, and fostering a spirit of teamwork and mutual support.

Through this program, Kings Schools aims not just to teach but to shape the future. By developing these life skills and values, the learners are not only prepared to succeed academically but also to thrive as global citizens—capable of building bridges across cultures, working with diverse groups of people, and seizing every opportunity that comes their way.

As the weeks go on, the Social Development Program at Kings Schools becomes more than just a learning experience; it becomes a journey of personal growth and collective understanding. The learners, led by their mentors, are evolving into thoughtful, compassionate individuals who will go on to make a difference in the world. They are ready to face the challenges of a global society with open minds and open hearts, united by the values that have been nurtured within them.

In the end, Kings Schools isn’t just preparing learners for exams—they are preparing them for life, for the world, and for the opportunity to be leaders of tomorrow.
